City of Sydney will give the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) a $1 million dollar one-off pledge to support its planned redevelopment.

"We believe the MCA is a wonderful Sydney institution which enhances the citys reputation as a centre for culture and the arts,"City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone said.

"The MCA is a modern, public institution operating in a building constructed in 1953, creating problems such as inadequate disabled access. City of Sydney strongly supports the planned redevelopment which will see disability access dramatically improved.

"We want to enhance Sydneys reputation as a centre for culture and art, while at the same time addressing the issue of equal access,"Ms Barone said.

MCA Director Elizabeth Ann Macgregor said today: "We welcome City of Sydneys funding commitment.

"The extension and renovation will allow the MCA to expand the important range of educational programs, properly house and display the collection including contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander artworks, as well provide much improved access for disabled visitors.

"This significant contribution from City of Sydney brings us closer to the realisation of this important project, helping Sydney maintain its status as a culturally vibrant city."

To help address the issue of access to art, the Lord Mayors Community Access Day, Saturday 23 August, will be part of this years Biennale of Sydney.

This program will open up the world of art to people with disabilities, their carers, family and friends, offering audio descriptions, guided tours accompanied by Auslan interpreters and tactile tours for people with intellectual disabilities.

Free wheelchair friendly transport will be available on the day to help visitors move between the three sites, Pier 2/3 at Walsh Bay, Art Gallery of NSW and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

"We look forward to the planned redevelopment giving a permanent home to the contemporary art of Indigenous Sydney, forming part of the Eora journey that we have outlined in Sustainable Sydney 2030,"said Ms Barone.

City of Sydneys grant follows the NSW State Governments commitment of $10 million to the planned redevelopment, as well as $15 million worth of commitments from the private sector.
