Young rich list leaders gain stunning rise in wealth

The 100 members of the 2016 BRW Young Rich list have enjoyed a stunning rise in wealth this year with the booming property sector and technology floats in Australia and abroad boosting overall wealth to a record $12.3 billion.

The 36-year-old Atlassian cofounders Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar top the Young Rich list again this year with combined wealth of $4.6 billion after the float of their software company Atlassian on the NASDAQ exchange in the United States late last year.

Mr Cannon-Brookes and Mr Farquhar have topped the Young Rich list a record five times, having debuted on the list with combined wealth of $26 million back in 2007.

The technology duo first rose to the No.1 ranking in 2012, when they knocked Nathan Tinkler from the top spot.

At No.3 and No.4 on the 2016 Young Rich List are another technology duo, Dave Greiner and Ben Richardson. They are the founders of Sydney company Campaign Monitor and have combined wealth of $543 million. Although they have stepped away from day-to-day management of the firm they remain directors and shareholders.

Rounding out the top five is Perth property developer Paul Blackburne at $483 million. His Blackburne Property Group dominates the Perth apartment market and develops three to four large apartment projects each year.

Sixth on the list is technology investor Simon Clausen at $479 million , who is involved in thriving tech businesses such as Chinese real estate portal Juwai.com and Freelancer , followed by Melbourne property developer Tim Gurner with a $414 million fortune.

Eight is Swisse Wellness CEO Radek Sali, who heads a thriving business that has found huge success exporting vitamins to China, and is also starting to invest in start-ups himself. His wealth is $405 million.

At No.9 is New York-based technology and property identity Ori Allon with a $316 million fortune. His real estate tech firm Compass has made a big splash disrupting the US property scene and is now worth more than $US1 billion after an August $US75 million fundraising.

Rounding out the top 10 is Sydney retailer and biotechnology company founder Sam Prince. He owns the Mexican fast food chain Zambrero and emerging biotech firm Life Letters , a genetics testing company, and has wealth of $294 million. Technology is the dominant sector with 27 on the list, followed by financial services and retail each with 11 on the list.
