Large fleet to tackle Sydney to Hobart |
The largest fleet in over a decade will line up for the 64th Sydney to Hobart yacht race, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) has announced.
A nominated fleet of 113, ranging from heavier, classic yachts to the sleek and modern, will set sail on the 628 nautical mile course at 1pm on December 26.
The fleet will represent every Australian state, the USA, UK, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia and New Caledonia.
"I am delighted with the number of applications to enter this years Sydney Hobart. The depth and colour of the fleet will make for an exciting race,"said CYCA Commodore Matt Allen.
A fleet of 90 yachts applied to enter last years race and of those, 82 made it to the start line on Boxing Day and 79 crossed the finish line off Hobarts historic Battery Point.
Wild Oats XI took 2007 line honours for the third consecutive year and American yacht Rosebud was the handicap winner.
