National Mothering Week

National Mothering Week

While every mother loves soggy cornflakes and a cold cup of tea in bed, a pasta necklace or a childs special painting, Mothers Day just isnt enough to recognise the work mothers do the other 364 days of the year.

To raise awareness of the importance of mothering, the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is celebrating National Mothering Week from 5-11 May.

This years focus is on the support ABA volunteers give to mothers to help them breastfeed their babies. ABA has over 1,000 volunteer breastfeeding counsellors around the country. Counsellors are mothers who have undertaken an extensive training course to provide information, counselling and encouragement to other mothers - help that is truly mum 2 mum.

Mothers are welcome to attend ABA mother support groups in their local areas. At ABA meetings new mums get a chance to meet other mothers and have their breastfeeding questions answered by a qualified breastfeeding counsellor.

Mums find this mother-to-mother support a great help in getting through the early days with a new baby, but ABA groups also have members with toddlers and older children too.

As well as local mother support groups, ABA runs a 7-day telephone Helpline, which takes about 1,000 calls a week and provides an invaluable service to Australian families. In many states the Helpline is available 24 hours.

Mothers can also connect with each other through the ABA website www.breastfeeding.asn.au which has forums and a wealth of information.
