Sydneys free shuttle bus service to expand

The City of Sydneys free Village to Village shuttle bus service will expand to include the Billyard Loop in Elizabeth Bay, recently removed from the Sydney Buses 311 route.

The expansion of the Citys Woolloomooloo to Redfern service to include the Billyard, Onslow Avenue and Ithaca Road Loop was endorsed unanimously by Council last night, along with a recommendation to continue sponsorship of the shuttle bus program for a further 12 months.

The City sponsors two Village to Village shuttle bus routes, Redfern to Glebe and Woolloomooloo to Redfern, which are operated by South Sydney Community Transport two days a week (Thursdays and Fridays).

The shuttle buses are designed to fill a gap in the service provided by regular bus operators.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said that the Village to Village shuttle buses play an essential role linking the City Centre and villages.

"An accessible and integrated transport network is crucial to our plan to make Sydney green, global and connected,"said Ms Moore.

"Were pleased to continue our sponsorship of this important community service and expand the route in Elizabeth Bay in response to the decision of Sydney Buses earlier this year to withdraw their service.

"The new loop will allow disadvantaged community members to access shops, community facilities and essential services such as health centres and hospitals."

The Redfern to Glebe shuttle service started in February 2007 and enables residents of Redfern, Waterloo and Glebe to access local amenities such as RPA Hospital, Glebe Library, the Fish Markets and Broadway shopping centre.

The Woolloomooloo to Redfern service started in February 2008 and links residents of Woolloomooloo, Potts Point, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills and Redfern to local services including Potts Point shops, Kings Cross Station, St Vincents Hospital, Central Station, Surry Hills shops and Redfern. It also connects to the Redfern to Glebe service, and will now include a stop in Onslow Gardens and Billyard Avenue, Elizabeth Bay.

During the period February 2009 to September 2009, there were a total of 15,931 passengers on the two routes, an increase of 6,454 trips over the same period last year.
