City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has called for the Federal Government stimulus package (Nation Building and Jobs Plan) to include support for sustainable infrastructure for the city, inclusive of the vital Inner Sydney Strategic Cycle Network.

"The City has collaborated with 15 Inner Sydney Councils, the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change, and the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, to identify a comprehensive network 245 kilometres of additional cycle lanes that can be created within the existing road corridor. This includes 160 kilometres of separated bicycle roads and 70 kilometres of upgraded shared paths,"Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

"This proposal would increase cycling in the city, reducing carbon emissions, improving peoples health, providing a low cost transport option and relieving congestion.

"The Inner Sydney Strategic Cycle Network supports our Sustainable Sydney 2030 Vision of a "Liveable Green Network"providing safe, high quality, continuous routes for pedestrians and cyclists. It proposes a cycling network that is safe enough for children to use, giving priority to separated, dedicated bicycle lanes.

"Work could start today to improve the use of the existing road network and dramatically increase safety and accessibility for cycling, making this healthy, emission-free transport more attractive."

The Inner Sydney Strategic Cycle Network will create jobs and build essential sustainable transport infrastructure.
