Parramatta's first gaol was established in 1796 in response to the rampant robberies plaguing the burgeoning penal colony. Unfortunately, it fell victim to a fire in 1799 and was hastily reconstructed the following year. A third and final iteration of the gaol was erected several decades later, serving as the local prison until its permanent closure in 2011. Situated north of the Parramatta River near the upper reaches of Cumberland Hospital, it stands as a testament to centuries of history, both dark and intriguing.
