Pedestrians urged to watch out on busy CBD streets

George St in Sydneys CBD has been revealed as the worst pedestrian accident street in the City of Sydney with 33 crashes involving pedestrians last year.

The City of Sydney is urging CBD workers, residents and visitors to take care crossing busy CBD roads as part of a new awareness campaign watch out cars about.

City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone said: "Although the number of pedestrians injured is generally decreasing each year, there were four people killed and 342 injured in the City of Sydney last financial year which is still too many.

"The City is committed to making the City Centre safer and people-friendly as part of Sustainable Sydney 2030 which proposes making George St a livable green corridor with enhanced public transport and priority given to pedestrians and cyclists.

"We also continue to advocate for a 40km/h speed limit on local streets across the entire Local Government Area to increase pedestrian safety,"Ms Barone said.

Thirty-three accidents involving pedestrians happened on George St last year followed by Oxford Street (20), Elizabeth Street (17), Pitt St (17), Goulburn St (11), Cleveland St (9), Druitt St (9), William St (9), Castlereagh St (8) and Clarence St (8).

There was a peak in accidents occurring between 3 pm and 6 pm as people rushed to catch transport home.

Young males in the 16 to 25 age bracket accounted for 73 injuries which was considerably higher than any other age bracket. Sixty-one women aged 16-25 were injured by cars while pedestrians aged between 21 and 25 accounted for 85 of the 346 recorded casualties.

Pedestrian accident hot spots generally centred around major railway stations. Between 2002 and 2006, 129 pedestrians were injured walking within 250 metres of Town Hall Station, 99 pedestrians near Central Railway Station, 92 near Wynyard and 24 near Redfern Railway Station over the same time period.

As part of watch out cars about, City of Sydney street performers recently handed out information near railway stations and the City commissioned advertising near pedestrian accident hot spots.
