Parramatta Stadium, now Pirtek Stadium, is a multi-purpose outdoor Stadium which was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Phillip on 5 March, 1986. Patrons and hirers acknowledge that the Stadium is the most intimate and enjoyable facility for entertainment and sporting events.
Parramatta Stadium replaced Cumberland Oval in 1986 as the new home for Rugby League in Western Sydney. From the decaying stands of Cumberland Oval, rose Parramatta Stadium, a new landmark in the Parramatta area, replacing the memories of the old oval which was known as the home of Rugby League in the area since the 13 a side sport began there in 1910.
With its predecessor being oval in shape, the new venue was rectangular to support not only Rugby League, but Football and Rugby Union as well. The Parramatta Stadium Trust was formed and took control of the ground in March 1989 from the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust. The Venue is now managed by Venues NSW.
Pirtek Stadium is recognised as the home of the local rugby league team, the Parramatta Eels as well as the A-League team the Western Sydney Wanderers, the Greater Sydney Rams and the NSW Surge. In addition the Stadium has hosted numerous rugby league, rugby union and football internationals as well as other significant national and international sporting events such as the Australasian Super X Championships. The venue forms an important part of the community and regularly holds a diverse array of community events including the Maronite 08 Event as a part of the World Youth Day celebrations.
On Wednesday, 9 October 2013, Parramatta Stadium was renamed Pirtek Stadium.
