Record crowd at Primo Italiano 2008

A record crowd turned out to celebrate Sydneys original little Italy for Primo Italiano 2008 on Sunday 25th May 2008.

An estimated 35,000 people enjoyed the day-long street festival which saw East Sydney transformed into a Primo Piazza complete with fountain, al fresco dining, gourmet food stalls, roving musicians, produce market, coffee and of course gelato!

Mathias from Germany took out the hotly contested and highly entertaining spaghetti-eating-competition, while local singers also wowed the crowds in the Italian karaoke competition.

An Italian brass band, Italian Sopranos & Tenors, The Godfathers, Caballeros Trio, Italian trivia and Primos very own Pavarotti performed in Stanley and Yurong Streets in East Sydney.

"Primo Italiano celebrates the area where Sydneys first Italian migrants settled after arriving at Woolloomooloo. Stanley St is rich in Italian history and developed a reputation as a simple, cheap cafĂ strip following a wave of Italian post-war migrants who settled in the area and opened businesses,"said Lord Mayor Clover Moore.

Some of Sydneys premier Italian restaurants had gourmet market stalls in Stanley and Yurong Streets with traditional foods like cannoli, risotto, Italian breads, wood-fired pizza, seafood, lasagna, biscuits and cheeses. Cafes in Stanley Street also serving up delicious Italian delicacies.

Primo Italianos resident DJ in the Primo Beer Garden with Cinzano cocktails at the Lord Roberts Hotel, the coffee-making demonstrations by Bertoni cafĂ, Sydney City Alfa display and fresh flower and produce market were also popular.

2008 was the fourth Primo Italiano produced by the City of Sydney, as a proud supporter of the Sydney Italian Festival.
