Royal Hall of Industries

Royal Hall of Industries

Considered to be the pinnacle of construction techniques when it opened in 1913, The Royal Hall of Industries has been an exhibition hall, morgue, roller- and ice-skating rink, boxing venue and ballroom.

Affectionately remembered by Sydneysiders as the Showbag Pavilion, the Royal Hall of Industries is majestic, grand, and most impressively rich in history.

Boasting a striking vaulted ceiling and magnificent cathedral windows, this beautifully restored venue is proudly reminiscent of its past glory.

Today it hosts many of Sydney's prestigious special events, offering a blank canvas where one is limited only by imagination. Feasts, fashion, fairs and festivals...

History:

On Friday 28 February 1913, Sir Francis Suttor, President of the Royal Agricultural Society, raised his glass of champagne and proposed a toast to a Mr J B Sanders, the architect of the showgrounds newest, and largest building. They were standing in the Royal Hall of Industries, built in just nine months at a cost of $23,000.

The Royal Hall of Industries was a considered a landmark of progress at the time of its construction. Although the outside is imposing and conservative with Greco-roman architectural details, go through the doors and you find a huge, bright space: 5400 square metres in total, with natural light flooding through the arched windows: a cathedral to Australian innovation.

Venue management

The Royal Hall of Industries is on lease from the Trust, and is managed on a day-to-day basis by Playbill Venues.
