The Shepherd Centre |
The Shepherd Centre works with children who are deaf and hearing impaired to teach them to speak and communicate in the hearing world. The approach focuses on listening as the foundation for developing spoken language, through the use of hearing devices such as hearing aids or cochlear implants.
Our family-centred approach ensures that parents or caregivers are given the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to work with their children in developing spoken language, managing hearing devices and advocating for their childs needs. For 30% of families attending our centres, deafness may be only one of several special needs of their child.
Our therapists have a diverse range of specialist skills and are able to confidently work with all families. The aim of the program is to help each child reach their individual potential and to have greater choices in schooling, occupation and lifestyle.
It is our belief that when families are provided with good information, professional guidance and emotional support they will make the best choices for their children.
We provide our early intervention services free of charge. We receive limited government funding and rely on the vital support and generosity of the community to continue our work.
