Alexandria cycleway to provide greener transport option
If you reside or work in Alexandria or simply pass through it on your way to work, youll soon have access to a cycleway providing a greener and more economic mode of travel.
With the number of people cycling to work in Beaconsfield and Alexandria having increased by an impressive 74% since 2001, the Alexandria cycleway network will make it easier and safer to cycle around the area and between the Airport, Green Square and the City.
"Riding a bike to work or to shops and Perry and Sydney Parks will lessen local traffic congestion while also delivering better health and environmental outcomes to the community, Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said today.
"We are also looking at how we can improve the amenity of our streets when we install each cycleway, and these plans include upgrading five bus stops along Bourke Road.
"Environmental pressures, congestion and the financial strain on our residents have made a green, convenient and cheap transport option even more critical."
The Alexandria cycleway network is expected to involve minor traffic works and minimal disruption to local residents and businesses, and is the first of such healthier and environmentally, carbon neutral projects planned for the near future.
Other key features of the cycleway include:
no removal of healthy, established trees
new kerb ramps for bicycles and new planted islands
the cycleway replacing parking along sections of one side of each road which could mean the loss of up to 220 non-residential parking spaces. There is parking in nearby streets howe'ver and in existing car parks within local businesses.
The plans have been released for community feedback which closes on 11 February 2009. Once feedback has been incorporated, final plans will be released before installation of the cycleway, which is expected to take just weeks and involve re-configuring lanes, putting in signs and physical changes to slow down traffic.
