Ascham School

Ascham School

Ascham is one of the oldest girls schools in Australia, founded by Miss Marie Wallis in 1886 with nine pupils in a Darling Point terrace.

Miss Wallis named the school after Roger Ascham, tutor to Englands Queen Elizabeth I. The vision and vigour of Miss Wallis, followed by Mr Herbert Carter, (1902-1914) who bought the large house Glenrock and its 2.6 hectares of grounds, secured the future of the school, when so many other small, privately-owned schools of the time did not survive.

Ascham is situated on 3.3 hectares of beautiful grounds on New South Head Road, Edgecliff, in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. The school is in a prime location near Sydney Harbour, only 3.5 kilometres from the CBD and five kilometres from the coastal beaches, including Bondi Beach.

Ascham is well served by public transport: Edgecliff railway station and bus terminal are opposite the schools main entrance in New South Head Road. Ascham is also within easy walking distance of Darling Point and Double Bay ferry wharves.

All girls from the age of four years up to the final year of school benefit from having the three sections of the school on the one site. This allows interaction between older and younger girls and staff, easy access to the schools many outstanding facilities and the enhancement of school community and spirit.
