Sydneysiders, visitors and tourists can gain a whole new perspective on what Sydney has to offer at a leisurely pace, thanks to a unique new bike tour service.
Specialist antique dealer and lifelong cyclist Graeme Dodd turned over a new leaf by starting the new small business - and after just eight months his bike tours of Sydney have drawn hundreds of tourists and gained rave reviews.
BIKEBUFFS offers a healthy and fun way to explore the best that Sydney has to offer on two wheels, visiting some of the citys most iconic sights as well as its hidden gems.
Using high-end bicycles and knowledgeable guides who have been Sydneysiders all their lives, BIKEBUFFS has been rated best Bicycle Tour Company by independent reviewers on the worlds biggest travel website, Trip Advisor, and sits in the top five of all Sydney tours.
Now, Bike Buffs has been named as a finalist in the Tourism category of the City of Sydneys prestigious Business Awards.
The Business Awards are the biggest and best yet, with 640 businesses nominated and almost 67,000 votes across 22 categories.
The winners will be announced by Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP at the 2011 City of Sydney Business Awards Gala Dinner hosted by Lisa Wilkinson on Tuesday, 13 September.
"We have a city that is bursting with sparkling sights and iconic landmarks - and there is simply no more efficient or enjoyable way to immerse yourself in it than on a safe and easy bicycle tour with an experienced local guide,"said Graeme.
"Ive always been an enthusiastic leisure cyclist - you cover so much more ground by cycling and feel invigorated at the end, not footsore.
"By the end of 2010 the antiques business worldwide was in decline, so I decided to use the opportunity to start a totally new enterprise based on my lifelong passion for cycling.
"We want to give tourists a new way to see Sydney by specialising in savvy and safe tours that provide an in-depth understanding of the citys amazing history, a great sense of fun and a laidback approach to discovering a part of the world that cant be beaten for beauty.
"We also think that bikes can help save our city by easing congestion and improving health, so were working hard to convince more people to ride - and I think that were slowly getting there, ride by ride, day by day.
"We believe that our involvement in this years excellent Business Awards program will help us expand our brand and build our small business venture into a bigger, better and more successful one,"added Graeme.
BIKEBUFFS offers both day and twilight tours, plus corporate rides, private guided tours and bike hire upon request. Tours are run in small groups and commentary on all the important sites is made in a laid back, conversational way at regular photo stops.
Tour highlights include the Botanic Gardens, Mrs Macquaries Chair, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour, Hyde Park and Luna Park. The day tour incorporates a lunch stop at the Sydney Fish Market, and there is also a tour to Manly which includes a ride to spectacular North Head, a swim at Shelley Beach and lunch on the Esplanade.
All participants get a snack pack included in their tour and BIKEBUFFS sends photos from each tour to clients afterwards.
To date, BIKEBUFFS has guided tourists from the United States and Canada, South America, Europe and the United Kingdom, Japan, China and New Zealand - plus dozens of interstate visitors and more than a few locals.
Over the next few years, Graeme is confident that a tour with BIKEBUFFS will become a "must do"part of a visit to Sydney.
