A new free online video library will help bike riders navigate Sydney streets safely.

BIKESydney, a not-for-profit community organisation, has won a grant from the City of Sydney to fund a Commute Route Video Library to advise people on the best route from home to work and to places of recreation.

President of BIKESydney, David Borella, said: When people first start riding, parts of these routes can seem daunting. BlKESydney is regularly asked to advise people new to cycling on the best routes from home to work. While a lot of routes use mostly bike paths or quiet back streets, at some point riders will need to join the road system. Its the anticipation of having to ride on roads that dissuades some people from riding.

A video showing what its actually like to ride the route will help allay some of those fears. This is all about route planning to advise on bike-friendly and low-traffic streets.

The video routes will be filmed with a helmet camera, and will be chosen and produced in consultation with the community. They will be made freely available online.

The call for route suggestions and video expertise will be posted on www.bikesydney.org. BIKESydney hopes that engaging the community will encourage others to produce their own videos.

Mr Borella said the videos will also showcase model behaviour while cycling: We need to get across important safety messages, such as wearing a helmet, obeying road rules, ringing your bell on shared paths, and riding with courtesy and grace.

The Sydney Cycle Commute Route Video Library is one of several new community projects funded by the City of Sydneys matching grant program.

The Citys Manager of Cycling Strategy Fiona Campbell said: We hope these community-inspired projects will overcome some of the barriers faced by people who want to use our cycle network and will raise awareness of the need to share roads and paths with other users.

All grant applications are assessed against Sustainable Sydney 2030, as well as the aims identified in a broad range of social, cultural, economic and environmental policies.
