Sydneys Indigenous community is helping upgrade Redfern Park and Redfern Oval as part of a City of Sydney initiative to employ and improve the skills of local Aboriginal tradesmen.

As part of the program, developed in conjunction with contractor Hansen Yuncken, 12 Aboriginal plumbers, labourers, electricians, concreters and landscapers were employed to work on various components of the project.

The park upgrade includes new public art, childrens play equipment, a new grandstand and upgraded oval for use by the community and for training by the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The City of Sydney actively encourages the employment of Aboriginal people on all major projects to increase and develop skills.

Ford Civil employed six Aboriginal people to work on the Citys upgrade of Redfern and Regent Streets while seven Aboriginal people are currently working for GMW Urban on the Citys Glebe Point Rd upgrade.

The City also has an Indigenous Employment Strategy providing inhouse two-year traineeships for young people which counts towards completion of the Higher School Certificate and a Certificate II at TAFE.

Participants can gain experience across different sections within Council including: Human resources, IT, finance, venue management, customer service, parks services and childcare services.

The students work almost full-time throughout the school holiday periods and continue to work one day per week in their allocated business units when school resumes.

The park was officially opened on Sunday 31 August, while the finishing touches are being added to the oval.
