Danish bikes roll across Sydney

City of Sydney is aiming to make Sydney a bicycle haven and is looking to Copenhagen, Denmark to show the way.

Dreams on Wheels, an exhibition in partnership between the Danish Embassy and City of Sydney, will open June 10 at University of Technology, Sydney, showcasing the possibilities for a cycling city.

"Riding a bike is a wonderful way to move about our city. It is efficient, healthy and environmentally friendly. Through Sustainable Sydney 2030 and our Cycling Strategy the City of Sydney is encouraging everyone to get on their bikes,"said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"City of Sydney aims to create a 200km network of cycling routes, including 55km of separated cycle lanes, linking our villages and the CBD. Within the next decade we want to boost the number of trips by bicycle by 500 per cent.

"This is a vital part of the Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision to give Sydney a livable green network for bike riders and pedestrians."

Design and construction of a separated cycleway on King Street in the CBD and Bourke Street from Woolloomooloo to Zetland will commence this year as the first stage in the Citys planned bike routes.

Dreams on Wheels will include examples of innovative Danish bikes, details on other cyclocentric cities like Copenhagen and information about what Sustainable Sydney 2030 means for transport in Sydney.

The exhibition also has a film program with several documentaries including Jørgen Leths work about the Tour de France and Cities for People which discusses the ideas of renowned Danish architect Jan Gehl whose work was central in the creation of Sustainable Sydney 2030.

Danish Ambassador Mrs Susanne Shine will open Dreams on Wheels: Cycling Culture for Urban Sustainability with the Lord Mayor on Tuesday night. The exhibition also marks the re-opening of the Embassy of Denmark in Canberra.

Dreams on Wheels: Cycling Culture for Urban Sustainability will be running from June 10 to June 22, Tower Building, Level 1, Broadway, University of Technology, Sydney.

Danish Ambassador Susanne Shine will be available for interviews on Tuesday, June 10 - contact Katja Goodhew 0418 644 898 for bookings.
