Free bus for Sydney CBD

Free bus for Sydney CBD

A new free off-peak bus service through Sydneys CBD will begin at lunchtime today, Premier Nathan Rees announced this morning.

A bright green bus, with the number 555, will run between Circular Quay and Central Station every 10 minutes. It will run along George and Elizabeth streets.

The service - which will cost $1.5 million for eight buses - will begin at midday today.

It will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm during the week, while on Thursdays it will finish at 9pm.

It will run on weekends between 9.30am and 6pm.

Passengers will not need to buy tickets, but can hop on the free service any time.

Transport Minister David Campbell said the buses would be air-conditioned and wheelchair accessible. Six of the eight buses will run at any one time.

Mr Rees said the buses were a simple and effective way to help commuters around town and were here to stay.

"This is a CBD shuttle service that will benefit commuters. It will benefit shoppers. It will benefit those people working in the CBD and of course tourists,"he said.

"[Its] totally free - not a trial - here to stay."

A similar service will be launched in the Illawarra early next year, linking the Wollongong CBD, Foreshore Precinct, University of Wollongong, TAFE and the Innovation Campus.

It will make the total cost $3 million.
