McDonald Jones Stadium

McDonald Jones Stadium, formerly known as Hunter Stadium, is the centrepiece of the Hunter Venues sports precinct. Originally known as the International Sports Centre, it was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 10th of April 1970.

McDonald Jones Stadium is situated in Newcastle and was first known as the International Sports Centre when it first opened in 1970.

Work on the centre commenced on the 1st December 1967 and was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 10th of April 1970. The Newcastle Knights secured a lease on the stadium in 1986 and converted it into what it is today.

The Eastern Grandstand was completed in April 2005 and contains two levels of seating for over 10,000 fans as well as a corporate suite level. A new Western Grandstand is currently being built to replace the original stand which had a capacity of 5,000 and is due for completion in early 2011. Behind each of the goals are several rows of seating, grass large hill and corporate boxes. The total capacity of the ground is currently around the 23,000-mark while construction of the new Western Grandstand takes place. Once complete, capacity will be around 33,000.
