Nominations sought for City of Sydney Aboriginal and Torres Strait Advisory Panel

An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Panel will be formed for the first time to help guide and advise the City of Sydney on key issues such as implementing an Indigenous Cultural Centre, Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP announced today.

A report to the Citys Cultural and Community Services Committee on Monday 26 May recommends seeking nominations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to form the panel to provide strategic advice to Council.

Discussions will cover a range of issues including cultural activities and events, training and employment, business development, recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage in the public domain, as well as the Citys policies and protocols.

The proposal follows recommendations from the Citys Sustainable Sydney 2030 Strategic Plan which recommends better representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the creation of an Indigenous Cultural Knowledge Centre and the Eora Journey.

"As the traditional custodians of the land, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are vital and valuable contributors to our Citys culture, both in the past and for the future,"says Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"We recognise the knowledge and insight of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as an invaluable resource for Council, and are dedicated to continuing a dialogue that actively engages our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

"Panel members serve a leading role in providing specialist advice to Council. The proposed advisory panel will not only strengthen the relationship between the City and our local Iindigenous communities, it will allow for a greater representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices in Council business."

The 14-member panel is proposed to comprise two Aboriginal elders; two Aboriginal young people under 25 years; six Aboriginal community representatives; one Councillor and three City officers. An Aboriginal co-chair, who will be elected at the inaugural meeting by the Panels members, will co-chair the panel with a City of Sydney Councillor.
