Robert Luketic

Robert Luketic (born 1973) is a Sydney-born film director. He directed the films Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, Legally Blonde, Monster in Law and 21.

Born in Sydney from an Italian mother and Croatian father, Robert, eldest of two children has a younger sister, Marie Luketic.

Robert Luketic cultivated his film career early when he won his first award for "Best Film"at the ATOM Film Festival at the age of 15. Luketic went on to study at the Victorian College of Arts - School of Film and Television (VCA), one of Australias most prestigious film schools.

Luketic first attracted Hollywoods attention with his award-winning short film Titsiana Booberini. A comic musical about a checkout chick starring Tania Lacy and Sophie Lee, it became such a hit on the festival circuit it led to a chance to direct Legally Blonde. After screening to much acclaim at several festivals within Australia, Titsiana Booberini became a hit at many internationally renowned festivals including Sundance, Telluride, Aspen and Santa Barbara.

Luketic screened an audio-visual presentation about homophobia and gay bashing for Mardi Gras one year but his filmmaking ambitions were really fostered when he studied at what is now the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne.

"The AFTRS [in Sydney] wouldnt take me until I was in my late 20s,"he says. "I told them thats just not going to happen. I ended up making Legally Blonde when I was 25. In retrospect, they were probably right. Maybe a filmmaker does need a little bit of experience. But I was an angry twentysomething who wouldnt listen to anyone. I found a very welcoming administration in Melbourne."

Luketic directed the smash hit comedy Legally Blonde for MGM in the summer of 2001. The film, which grossed close to $100 million domestically and was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, marked Luketics feature film directing debut.

Next, Luketic directed the Dreamworks Pictures film Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!. The 2003 film, produced by Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher at Red Wagon, stars Kate Bosworth, Nathan Lane, Josh Duhamel and Topher Grace. In 2005, he directed Monster In Law, starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, who came out of a 15-year hiatus for this film.

Luketic is developing a slate of projects including a feature film version of the iconic television show, Dallas. Robert Harling (Steel Magnolias) is writing, while Michael Costigan is producing for Twentieth Century Fox/New Regency.

In addition, Luketic is developing a supernatural romantic drama, One of Us, written by Gerald DiPego (The Forgotten) with Alan Riche and Peter Guber producing for Revolution Studios.

Also on Luketics slate is Matt Helm, for Dreamworks with Team Todd producing. This action-adventure film is based on a series of spy novels written by Donald Hamilton and will mark a major genre-breaking franchise for Luketic.

Other projects include the comedy Girl Most Likely To with producer Marc Platt, and 21 based on the novel Bringing Down the House by Ben Mezrich.

Luketic currently resides in Los Angeles.
