Bike riding is back in fashion. On Sunday 19 October bikes will be centre stage in Sydney as thousands of people take to two wheels for the annual City of Sydney Spring Cycle.

Now in its 14th year, Sydneys most popular recreational bike ride is bigger than ever. In addition to the traditional ride from North Sydney giving riders the rare chance to cycle over the Harbour Bridge, this year sees the addition of new routes from Blacktown and Liverpool.

Cycling is no longer the preserve of the lycra-clad enthusiast. Eco friendly and great for your health, the bike is the hot new celebrity fashion statement favoured by the likes of Elle MacPherson and David Beckham.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the City of Sydney is proud to sponsor the event which supports the Citys plans to encourage and increase cycling.

"Our Cycling Strategy aims to increase the amount of cycling trips by 500 per cent by 2017 to make cycling a safe and convenient transport choice for inner city travel,"Ms Moore said.

"Cycling is a great way to get fit", said Donna Little, Events Director of Bicycle NSW. "Its more gentle on the body than running not to mention a lot more gentle on the wallet with these high petrol prices! The City of Sydney Spring Cycle is the perfect excuse to dust off the treadly and get back in the saddle."

Raising money for MS Australia, the event finishes at Sydney Olympic Park as part of the Festival of Cycling, so if you cant be cajoled onto a bike you can always cheer from the sidelines!
