City of Sydney donates to Red Cross China and Burma Appeals |
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP today presented a $100,000 donation from the City of Sydney to the Australian Red Cross China Sichuan Earthquake Appeal.
The City will also donate a further $100,000 to the Australian Red Cross Myanmar (Burma) Cyclone Appeal.
"This is a devastating and tragic time for the world,"Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said. "As a Council and as a city, we have a responsibility to assist those that have been affected by these heart wrenching disasters.
"On behalf of the City of Sydney and the people of Sydney, I hope these funds go some way to provide relief and support to our fellow nations in this crucial time of need."
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP also announced the City of Sydney will establish a special program to match dollar-for-dollar City of Sydney staff contributions to the Australian Red Cross Appeal 2008.
"We continue to encourage Sydneysiders to give generously to the Australian Red Cross Appeal to support the relief efforts in both China and Burma. Every donation, howe'ver small, is needed to rebuild the lives of millions."
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP visited China last week and signed the book of condolence at the Guandong Foreign affairs Office to pay her respects to the victims of the earthquake disaster.
"Sydney has developed a strong and valuable relationship with its Chinese neighbours, and shares in their loss at this devastating time.
"More than 35,000 Chinese Red Cross volunteers are working around the clock to provide food, water, clothing and medical supplies to Earthquake victims in Sichuan. While their tireless hard work and courageous efforts are commendable, there are still five million people left homeless by the earthquake. We need to think practically and positively in order to help these nations rebuild their cities and the lives of so many left behind."
