City of Sydney Oversees Artist Spaces at CUB Precinct |
Empty warehouses and terraces at the CUB site on Broadway could be turned into temporary studio spaces for artists under a City of Sydney and Frasers Property plan.
The development proposal is currently on public exhibition and seeks consent for three warehouses and five terraces in Kensington Street, Chippendale to be used as temporary artists spaces until the construction of the CUB development commences.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said that these artists studios are part of an eclectic mix of development that would see the CUB site become a great addition to the citys southern fringe.
"I am pleased to see that Frasers Property is supporting the arts community with these new studios. The Citys Sustainable Sydney 2030 Project recognises that arts and cultural activities are fundamental to liveability, diversity, quality of life, and increasingly, to economic development.
"The City provides a platform for creative expression and has a concentration of world class cultural destinations and a growing cluster of businesses engaged in creative industries. These new studios will be a part of that dynamic mix."
On the eastern edge of the Carlton and United Brewery site, the warehouses and terraces of Kensington Street form a unique record of the history of industry and housing in this locality.
Two of three warehouses have long associations with the old Tooths brewery, dating back to 1914, whilst the terrace houses reflect a number of styles and periods, including an 1850s residence built from rough sandstone rubble, a pair of two-storey heritage listed stone terraces from 1885 and an Edwardian terrace from 1905.
The CUB concept plan envisages a 6 green star urban quarter on Broadway that has a target of 100% carbon neutrality through the installation of a tri-generation facility and extensive use of solar power and 100% non potable water supplied through on-site rainwater capture and waste water recycling.
Submissions on the DA for the provision of the artists spaces close on June 11 and more details on the proposal and the DA itself can be viewed at: www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Development/DAsOnExhibition.
