Residents and businesses who own low-emission cars such as hybrids will be rewarded with discounted parking permits from July 1.
"The City is encouraging the use of more sustainable vehicles by introducing environmental pricing for our Resident and Business parking permits", said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
"More efficient vehicles with lower rates of emissions already save their owners on fuel, but now they can also save drivers money on parking."
"It is time for government, business and the community to start taking action to address climate change and we hope this measure will further encourage drivers to do their bit", said Ms Moore.
The new parking permit structure will have four rates:
Very Low Impact (50 per cent of the standard fee, $22)
Low Impact (75 per cent of the standard fee, $34)
Medium Impact (standard fee, $45)
High Impact (double the standard fee, $90).
"The sliding scale of fees reflects the CO2 emissions, air pollution rating and fuel consumption levels of specific makes and models", said Ms Moore.
The categories are based on environmental ratings provided by the Commonwealth governments Green Vehicle Guide which has been available since 2004. Vehicles sold before 2004, or those not appearing in the Guide will continue to pay the standard permit fee.
Nearly 18,000 holders of Resident and Business parking permits across the City of Sydney received details of the new scheme in their renewal notices this month.
The proposal only applies to resident and business parking permits. Visitor permits and Resident Health Carer permits will continue to be charged the standard fee (equivalent to a medium impact vehicle).
The new permit structure is expected to be revenue neutral for the City.
