Labour Co-op has stood the test of time evolving with business trends to become one of New South Wales leading employment service organisations. A truly unique organisation that is managed as a commercial enterprise, with the exception that surplus generated are funnelled back into assisting people in finding employment.

Twenty years ago, the Hunter Region experienced major layoffs in the industrial sector especially following the closure of the State Dockyard.

From this employment crisis, a Newcastle organisation was born when a group of metal trades people, members of Australian Metal Workers Union (AMWU) devised the concept of establishing a co-operative to assist with the re-employment of Hunter retrenched workers.

A proposed short-term project of six months to research the proposal to form a labour co-op, gained initial finance from the AMWU and the Workers Co-operative program, which at the time was a unit of the NSW Ministry of Employment.

There quickly became an apparent need that the co-ops services had to become ongoing, so the Labour Co-operative Ltd was formed in 1986 and the initial starting loan was repaid.

From this early start, Labour Co-op has grown with subsidiaries throughout NSW, known as Labourco, with a reputation as an experienced manager of human resources and job creators and an organisation with a big heart.

As a non-profit organisation, Labour Co-op and its subsidiaries have gone from strength-to-strength based on the philosophy of being a people-centred business.

Operations are governed by a Board of Directors, who freely volunteer both their services and expertise. One of the foundation board members, still maintains his twenty-year long involvement and strong interest in the operations of Labour Co-op.

Surplus funds generated by Labourco, today fund programs to assist with retraining incentives so employment chances of workers are enhanced.

Over the past three years more than casuals have gained fulltime work through the Co-op.
