New weekly fresh food market in the heart of Sydney
City residents and workers will be able to buy the freshest produce from across the Sydney basin at the new weekly Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers & Fine Food Market in the heart of the CBD.
"These new markets will be a welcome addition to the Sydney CBD, providing a lively place for people to shop, relax and enjoy fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine and a range of local produce,"said City of Sydney Creative Director Gill Minervini.
"The markets will help re-energise the newly upgraded square at Cook + Phillip Park and give Sydney workers and residents access to fresh food and fine produce in line with our Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision."
The City of Sydney has formed a partnership with Hawkesbury Harvest, a collective of farmers from the Sydney basin, who will run the markets each Friday.
"Hawkesbury Harvest is a community based organisation, which began as a small group of farmers passionate about the Hawkesbury region and its agricultural heritage,"said Hawkesbury Harvest Secretary Alan Eagle.
"Were really excited about giving farmers from across the Sydney basin the opportunity to promote and sell their fresh, seasonal produce in the heart of the City."
The new Hawkesbury Harvest Farmers & Fine Food Market and upgrade of the square at Cook + Phillip Park will be launched on Friday 22 August 2008 and will include live entertainment by Waiting for Guinness.
The markets will take place at the newly upgraded and refurbished square at Cook + Phillip Park.
Recent works include:
Essential maintenance work on the Aquatic Centre roof, restoration of the reflection and reed pools, new timber seating and new paving.
The new forecourt in front of St Marys Cathedral features small granite cobblestones throughout the site with new timber seating to deter skateboarding.
Random-patterned fountains and water features in the decorative ponds will help discourage seagulls.
Handrails around the forecourt have been upgraded
A new strip of Bruce Rock Granite has been integrated into the site providing a visual link between the Australian Museum, Cook & Phillip Park aquatic centre and St Marys Cathedral.
