Year 9 student poster design to encourage safer school crossing |
New posters designed by a student from Sydney Boys High School will go on display on the school fence from next week reminding pedestrians to safely cross Anzac Parade.
The winning poster entry asks: Whats the rush? Look, Listen and Be Safe.
22 posters were entered into the Sydney Boys High School Road Safety Art Competition ran by the City of Sydneys Road Safety Team. The competition was organised by the City, amid concerns about student safety near the Anzac Parade pedestrian crossing.
"Many teenage boys tend to think theyre invincible, but they are no match for a car or a truck on a major road,"said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
"This competition was about getting students to consider the consequences of whether a quick dash across the road is worth the sacrifice of a stint in hospital, a life-time injury, or even worse."
The City worked with Sydney Boys High School and the NSW Department of Education and Training to include Road Safety Education into their English and Visual Arts curriculum.
Students were asked to create an artwork that raises pedestrian awareness and encourages road safety education for students. The pilot program also included a workshop for parents and supervisors of learner drivers.
"School opening and closing times are some of the busiest times for pedestrians and vehicle traffic, so this poster will serve as a reminder to students and other pedestrians outside Sydney Boys High School that crossings are there for our own safety."
The Sydney Boys High School road safety art competition is the Citys most recent road safety campaign in a series of in-school programs to raise student awareness of road safety.
The winning poster will be presented at a school assembly on Wednesday, 6th August 2008 between 10am-11am.
First prize in the competition was a $500 Rebel Sport voucher, second prize was a Canon PowerShot A460 Digital camera with 1GB memory card, valued at $179.90 from Teds Camera, third prize was a $100 voucher from EB Games and fourth to tenth prizes were Greater Union movie vouchers.
