Watershed awards recognise environmental excellence |
The outstanding environmental workshops held by the Watershed Sustainability and Resource Centre in Newtown earned it two prizes in the 2008 Local Government and Shires Association Excellence in the Environment Awards, held on Tuesday 2 December.
The Watershed was the winner of its division in the Environmental Education Award, and was also the overall winner of the Environmental Education Award, beating six other nominees from local government organisations across New South Wales.
The Watershed is a unique community learning hub for urban sustainability. It is a joint initiative of Marrickville Council and City of Sydney Council.
"These two awards recognise the significance and successful impact of The Watersheds Urban Sustainability Workshop series, which aims to teach participants the importance of sustainability and to help us to adopt more environmentally friendly behaviours,"Mayor of Marrickville Sam Iskandar said.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said: "During the Citys public consultation on our 2030 vision, people told use they want a city that is green, global and connected and 98 per cent want us to take action on global warming. The Watershed is a great example of creating change at a grass-roots level by giving people the skills to make sustainability a part of everyday life."
The awards also acknowledge the value of The Watersheds Urban Sustainability Resource Kit, which has been distributed to more than 120 environmental educators throughout the state, and its Research and Evaluation of Leading Practice Report, which demonstrates the influence of the workshop series on participants, their families and friends, and further afield.
"It is important to stress that the success of The Watershed would not be possible without the amazing volunteers who give their time and expertise at the workshops and seminars,"Councillor Iskandar said. "More than 5000 participants and numerous volunteers have contributed to The Watersheds 353 workshops over the past five years.
"Congratulations to The Watersheds staff, volunteers, facilitators and supporters for their contribution to winning the LGSA awards,"Councillor Iskandar said.
The Watersheds workshops include Composting and Worm Farming, Natural Baby Care, Introduction to Sustainable Living, No Dig Gardening, Natural Cleaning and Home Detox, Natural Personal Care and Eco Choices for Home Renovators.
