20-year-old University of Wollongong student Katie Richardson has been crowned Miss World Australia.

The Illawarra NSW resident was crowned at Sydneys Star casino Wednesday night and will now represent Australia at the Miss World title in September in Ukraine.

"I just cant wait to be able to use the title in order to carry out my charity work,"Ms Richardson told The Daily Telegraph.

The Miss World competition says it is not simply a beauty pageant but a means of raising money for charity, raking in $2 million last year alone.

"The judges will be looking for a young lady who will be an example to young people, not only in making the best of her physical attributes, but also her talent, for this is the ingredient on which she will rely on for her progress at the conclusion of her year at office,"the Miss World Australia website says.
