Sydney has spoken: Demanding action for a greener future

More than 95 per cent of Sydneysiders demand an environmentally sustainable future, according to a survey conducted by the City of Sydney as part of Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision.

Commissioned by the City of Sydney and prepared by SGS Economics and Planning, the two-part survey of 1,000 people in the Sydney metropolitan area explored issues of quality of life, targets for the future, transport and education.

Ninety-seven per cent of participants agree that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the most important target to reach over the next two decades. This figure drastically compares to 35 per cent of total participants who believe that the city is currently environmentally responsible.

"Sustainability and long-term, strategic planning is the answer,"says Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP. "Our goal is to close the gap between the ideal vision of Sydney, and the Sydney as we know it today.

"The message from the people of Sydney has come through loud and clear: they want change for their city. They want a City that is green, global and connected."

The findings come on the eve of the release of Sydneys most comprehensive long-term plan for the Citys future - Sustainable Sydney 2030. It will be presented to Council on 7 April 2008 to begin its final phase of consultation.

Sustainable Sydney 2030 is the culmination of 12 months of consultation with tens of thousands of Sydneysiders.

During the past 12 months the City has held more than 30 community forums, round-table discussions, business forums and City Talks; received more than 15,000 website visitors and 200 comments; and received more than 2,000 comments through the Future Phone.

According to the survey, more than 80 per cent of participants agree the City of Sydney should become a world class leader in promoting policies to address Climate Change.

"Residents support the City of Sydneys push to achieve a greener and safer environment in 2030,"says Ms Moore.

In addition, all actions proposed in the survey by the City of Sydney to reduce the adverse affects of climate change gained widespread support with 62 per cent of respondents believing that climate change is a serious threat to the City of Sydney.

Green Corridors, one of the 2030 projects environmental initiatives listed in the survey, also gained overwhelming support with 92 per cent of respondents believing it is very important to connect local areas such as Centennial Park, Moore Park and Sydney Park for pedestrians and cyclists.

The draft plan will be considered by Council on Monday 7 April for public exhibition from April 17.

The exhibition will present the different component and projects of the strategy into a form that will be accessible for all the community.
