Porteno is one of the hottest newcomers to Surry Hills.
From the pair behind that other Surry Hills legend Bodega, this new venture of Elvis Abrahanowicz and Ben Milgate is a tribute to the fine city of Buenos Aires and its traditional asado. The two-level, 300-seater restaurant promises to deliver on meat, meat and more meat and wont discriminate: pork, lamb, goat, chicken, seafood and whatever else can be thrown on the live coals of the asado grill are on offer here, and its sure to be one popular cook-up. - http://yourrestaurants.com.au/guide/porteo/
Sydney is enriched by this warm, buzzing, multi-level room, fragrant with wood smoke and high on charcoal-fuelled energy, run in a casual but professional manner. We have some great restaurants, chefs, food and wine ideas and individual dishes in this town but rarely does the whole thing come together in one place as the irresistible, unstoppable force that it is here. - www.smh.com.au
Their inventive side gets its greatest workout over dessert. I reckon the firmness of the jelly in the Piņa Colada spider mars its cleverness; for me, the pick of the sweets is the pavlova, rendered as a sort of mess combining shards of meringue with dulce de leche, a little sponge and - a touch of classic Milgate-Abrahanowicz perversity - fresh mango sous-vided to resemble canned fruit.
Porteņo is as much a family affair as Bodega on the floor, too, with Valore and the unfailingly glamorous Sarah Doyle leading a floor team of mostly young, mostly friendly waiters. Wine leans heavily South American; if you want to exercise your taste for Argentine malbec, Valore has the bottle for you. - http://gourmettraveller.com.au
