Public wanted for Sydney Harbour plan |
The NSW government has called on Sydneysiders to get involved in shaping a management plan for Sydney Harbour National Park, saying it wants the famous spots to be more welcoming to the public.
The park comprises 393 hectares of land across four headlands and five islands, and the state government wants to update its 1998 management plan for the harbour to make the areas more welcome to the public.
The governments management plan will be released later in the year, but on Sydneys Goat Island on Saturday Acting Premier Carmel Tebbutt called on Sydneysiders to get involved in its development.
People can register their interest in the plan with the government wanting to hear what they want done with the park.
Ms Tebbutt said Goat Island was a perfect example of how to reinvigorate the harbour sites, with government spending $9 million to reopen the island later this year.
Octobers island-hopping cultural and food festival, involving the five harbour islands, also showed how the sites could be better used to promote Sydney, she said.
"The borders of the harbour national park stretch from Bradleys Head to North Head and South Head, taking in some of the citys most popular and scenic spots,"she said.
"The plan of managements... primary focus is to protect and manage the historical, cultural and natural values of Sydney Harbour National Park.
"But we certainly think that there is a greater opportunity for people to see this national park, for more people to visit this national park, and we want the plan of management to provide for that.
"We want to hear from Sydneysiders about how theyd like to see Sydney Harbour National Park utilised and opened up to the community."
